2.5" Sata Hard drive external case bundle 160gb SATAII HDD

The goods on order number 60265851 have arrived, but I am not happy with the hard drive. I understood the disc drive was “plug and play”, but when it arrived it had several different cables and I have no idea what they are for. I tried connecting the device to a computer running XP with the USB cable and it did not even recognize the devise so I tried it with another computer running Vista and the same thing happened. There is a piece of paper saying the disc drive has to be partitioned before it can be used but I am not that computer literate to be able to do this, especially if the computer does not recognise the drive. I would like to return the device and buy a real “plug and play’ drive. I have a Western Digital (on a PC ) and a Maxtor (on a Mac) and these were just “plug and play” and simple to use. Please advise what I can do.
