The competition between HP and Epson when it comes to multi-functional printer is quite old and though Epson has an edge in some cases (this is really my personal opinion), HP does manage to make headway when it comes to budget solutions for home users. The C5280 fits in well in the budget of most users and it offers an elegantly designed printer which looks good and works quite well.

The HP Photosmart C5280 is slightly on the slower side, but then as a home user, it should not be of major concern. The speed is lower both on the printer installation and the printing aspect of the printer. The C5280 also makes a fair amount of noise when printing but that is something which is present in most budget-level multifunctional printers from HP.

The print quality is decent but it tends to become a bit of an issue over a period of time. The printer is quite economical to use and the cost of operations is low. However, with the noisy output and slower speed, this printer from HP might not suit home users who need a good number of printouts. It might be safe to say that the HP Photosmart C5280 might not be one of the best printers offered by HP.

I can't really compare this HP printer with any Epson printer as I only have HP C5280, but I do agree that this unit has low cost of ownership. When the original black printer ink cartridge ran out I decided to try some generic printer ink refill for the first time. To my great surprise, the print quality was more than reasonable at a fraction of the cost. I am not sure about a colour cartridge, colour printer ink should surely be harder to replace with generic ink?
