“Excellent Power but Average Performance”

Strengths: Improved typing experience, good battery life.

Weaknesses: No considerable improvement in performance.

The Asus Eee PC 1000HE is an overhauled version of its predecessors, and is in direct competition with the HP Mini series and Acer’s Aspire One series netbooks. The biggest strength of the Asus 1000HE is its amazing battery life. The company claims that the six-cell battery coupled with innovative engineering techniques provide a battery life of 9.5 hours. Asus says that this can be made possible, provided the system runs in power-saving mode with 40% LCD brightness, Webcam, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are disabled.

The new and improved keyboar is another selling point of the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. The keys are widely spaced with flat tops, and the keypad offers a comfortable typing experience. In earlier Eee PC keyboards certain important keys such as the right Shift key were illogically placed, and this factor has been dealt with in this version. Also, Asus has incorporated few shortcut keys in the keyboard, one each for selecting power profiles, changing screen resolution and starting Skype.

Having said all that, there has been only minimal improvement in the performance of this netbook, which is the major drawback. Powered by the 1.66-GHz Intel Atom N280 processor, you can work one application at a time with good sped. But, if you want to operate multiple applications in multiple windows, then you will be guaranteed to experience slowdown and stuttering. Overall, if your processing requirements are low, the Asus Eee PC 1000HE is a good choice at a fair price tag.
