The TomTom XL 340 is a great step ahead in TomTom’s successful XL series of navigation devices. It is packed with many advanced features.

The TomTom XL 340 has a 4.3-inch WQVGA touch sensitive display that occupies the major part of the front panel. The IQ route is one of my favourites. It lets you get to your destination quickly even during traffic congestion by guiding you to roads with not so heavy traffic. The advanced lane guidance helps you stick to your chosen route by flashing arrows indicating the correct route that you have to follow.

The GPS syncs effortlessly to personal computers or Mackintosh to enable you to plan routes and to add more maps and updates. You can even add voices to the GPS. The TomTom XL 340 GPS features the text-to-speech option. The audible assistance is pretty loud and clear. You can even search for Points of interest by their names. It comes pre-installed with the latest and complete maps of Australia. It also has an EasyPort mount that comes handy for placing and removing the unit from the windshield.

The absence of Bluetooth and live traffic information is a big damper on its functionality. The GPS is portable but isn’t really pocket-friendly. You will also have to purchase the RDS-TMS receiver for getting real-time traffic data. There is no SD or microSD card slot on the XL 340 GPS. Be prepared to manage things with the 2GB internal memory.

If you are fine with some of these functional drawbacks, then the TomTom XL 340 GPS is recommended.
