Strengths: Good image quality, nice camera design, large LCD display, lots of automatic and manual controls

Weaknesses: Faces tough competition from newer models, lens caps comes off very easily and battery consumption is quite high

A great combination of features (both manual and automatic) and a rock-solid exterior makes Canon PowerShot ready for pictures just about anywhere. The ergonomically friendly camera design is very easy to hold and shoot and offers users an opportunity to capture imaginative images. The balance between manual and automatic controls offers users the ability to manage the output quite well.

The LDC display is large enough for it to offer clear picture viewing and though there are some noise which is visible in images of higher ISOs, the PowerShot S5 IS manages to offer users everything it promised. The problem with the camera does not lie within it…the S5 IS faces tough competition from newer cameras with better functionality and that is something that might discourage users to latch on to this Canon PowerShot.

On the pricing front the camera is reasonably priced but it turns expensive once you start realizing how many batteries the PowerShot gobbles. Users complain that the lens cap tends to open very fast and this might create a bit of a nuisance when outdoors. The Canon PowerShot S5 IS continues to enjoy consumer favor at this stage…the challenge is to continue this trend and beat the competition.
