To begin with, the Creative Zen 8GB MP3 media player is a flash-based product intended to replace the Zen Vision:M. The design of the control pad looks very ordinary, and the fact that this player comes only in black is very disappointing. Also, the absence of a dedicated volume control button can be a little frustrating at times.
Putting these negatives away, the Creative Zen 8GB MP3 media player is an absolutely fantastic gadget and lives up to its reputation when it comes to offering rock solid performance. The selling points of the Zen are its sound quality, colour display, user-friendly design and an SD card expansion slot. The 2.5-inch TFT screen is capable of displaying 16.7 million colours and supports JPEG photos, which can be viewed as a thumbnail or in full-screen mode on the playback display. Photos look vibrant and bright, with excellent colour saturation and good detail.
This player supports WMV and Motion JPEG videos and also plays DiVX, and XViD videos after conversion. Videos are clear and bright with no noticeable pixilation and the viewing angle from side to side is excellent. The Zen offers a rich, mind blowing audio performance for all genres of music and supports unprotected AAC files, supports MP3, WAV, Audible, and both protected and unprotected WMA tracks.
With Zen Creative has included an SD slot for the first time in its MP3 players for that extra memory space. The controls are user-friendly, and the rated battery life of 25 hours for audio and 5 hours for video is laudable. Overall, the Creative Zen 8GB MP3 media player is a cheap, pocket-sized MP3 player with excellent audio, video and plenty of extra features.
