The SX10 IS retains body shape and most of the features of its predecessor S5 IS. Behind the lens lid, the SX10 has a 10 megapixel sensor, 28 to 560mm wide angle lens and a 20X zoom. However, the 20X zoom sounds outdated with 24X and 26X lenses selling in the market.

The Canon PowerShot SX10 IS digital SLR camera produces good quality pictures. The Auto Focus and Face detection works without any issues. The image stabilisation feature is helpful when capturing pictures at low shutter speed. One of the mentionable update of the SX10 IS is the Face self timer, which is capable of capturing the image after a specified face appears on the frame. The dedicated movie mode button should come in handy for consumers who capture lot of movies. The SX10 captures 30fps VGA quality movies and the good news is – zoom is available in movie mode too. However, the lack of HD movie capture calls for a serious upgrade from Canon. Perhaps, the stereo mike is retained from its predecessor. The SX10 offers an articulated 2.5-inch LCD display with 230,000 pixel composition. The LCD size is a flaw for the SX10, as the competitors of its class are provided with 2.7 or 3-inch. However, the articulating feature is found only in fewer models of its category.

With very few hedges, the Canon SX10 qualifies as a worthy successor to the S5 IS.
