Strengths: Good entry level DSLR with well balanced features

Weaknesses: With 6.0 megapixel strength, it’s not as powerful as you would expect it to be

Nikon’s lead as a camera manufacturer is legendary and you can understand the reasons for it when you get familiar with the D40. The D40 is not your point-and-shoot camera for sure…it has enough features to give most DSLRs a run for their money. However, what is surprising is that with good features to boot, the Nikon D40 is powered merely at 6 mega pixels. Barring this point (and this can be an important consideration when buying a camera) the D40 can be considered as one of the best purchases in this category.

The image quality gets a cool eight on ten and though there is slight visible noise at higher ISOs, it is not really an issue since you can make it out only if you look for it. Other than that, the camera feels very good to hold and can fit in easily in most hands. The camera manages to make it easy for first-time users of the SLR as it has an intuitive menu system and is not as complicated as some of the professional cameras available these days.

Though the D40 is a good DSLR, it does not manage to impress professionals and remains an entry level digital SLR mainly due to its 6 megapixel constraint. Pricing is quite reasonable and if you are on the lookout for your first digital SLR camera then you should give the Nikon D40 a serious consideration.
