Strengths: Innovative Wii remote, sleek and small design

Nintendo went in an entirely different direction with its latest console, focusing more on attracting new players rather than catering to the high demands of hard-core gamers.

Since its release in November 2006, the Nintendo Wii has succeeded in providing entertainment to a widely diverse audience. Its motion sensitive gameplay, the Wiimote (similar to a TV remote) and pseudo virtual reality controls are its biggest selling points. It offers innovative gameplay and places greater importance on having fun. The Wii’s online capabilities and backwards compatibility with GameCube software make it good value for money.

Despite its commercial success, the Wii has some drawbacks. The controllers quickly go through batteries and are less user-friendly. The console is a disappointment if you are looking for realistic graphics accompanied by surround sound, like you get with the XBox 360 and PS3. However, Nintendo never intended to battle on these grounds.

Overall, the Nintendo Wii is an ultra-affordable console that is difficult to resist (and trendy to own). With the included Wii Sports game, it provides plenty of fun for the whole family right out of the box.
