Strengths: Interesting packaging which brings the Eastern concepts on the forefront. Very long staying ability

Weaknesses: Does not have too much of an appeal as a fruity fragrance

Named after an Indian State, one would expect Benghal from Lancome to carry the mystique of India with its multiple tones ranging from floral to masculine. Well, it does have some of it, but nothing that impresses us so much that we feel the need to applaud this perfume. Launched a bit more than a year ago, Benghal’s branding leaves nothing to be desired specially since the mystical East beckons all and sundry.

Surprisingly, Benghal is actually more fruity than spicy (as was originally expected) and comes with a urban bohemian packaging which has a very niche appeal. The fusion of modern with the traditional is there but not interesting enough to make Benghal strike all the right notes with the fussy fashionista. What does appeal to the experienced nose is the fact that it has phenomenal lasting power and does not require refreshing at any point of the day.

Benghal is a good gift for someone who has a penchant for the modern East but might not appeal to someone who is looking for a sophisticated perfume which can become a signature. Anyways, what Benghal does manage to convey is that Indian names and ideas are fast becoming mainstays even in the high profile world of fashion and we should expect more products and fragrances which are direct inspirations from the East.
