How do I wash my towels so that they are nice and soft and fluffy in a front load washing machine?

I have just bought the Bosch Front load washing machine and am disappointed in the state of my once soft towels. How can I keep the softness that the top load washing machine produced?

Hi Leanne,
I was intrigued by this question because I have only really ever used a front loader myself, so I have not personally experienced this dramatic difference with towels. But as I was looking around for a soloution to this problem, I found out that a lot of people have the same complaint - towels that were once soft and fluffy with a top loader are now just the opposite after switching to a front loader. So here's some ideas that you can try and hopefully alleviate this problem!
1. Try to wash the towels in cold water (hot makes the cotton fibres brittle) and just hang them in a shady spot that gets a nice breeze. To make them really fluffy, just let them get almost dry on the line and then pop them in the dryer on a cool setting for 10 minutes to finish them off.
2. Front load washers don't need as much detergent as a top-loader. Try using a little less detergent and see if that helps.
3. It could also be that they are being spun too dry with the spin cycle. On a lot of front loaders, there is a button to adjust the spinning speed. Try reducing the speed and see if that helps any.
Good luck!

Hi Leanne, Did you not loose the softness of the towel from the top loading machine? I am also intrigued by this question and can only recommend use of a fabric softener at this time since you have just bought a washing machine and are not likely to go and change it due to this problem. A really good fabric softer option is www.myshopping.com.au/GO--136753833_Dryer_Max_Dryer_Balls_Reuseable_Natural_Way_to_Soften_Fabrics_at_CrazySales_com_au which apparently is quite long lasting and does not need frequent replinishment.

Hi Susan, yes the top loader had fluffier results. Have always used 'fluffy' or 'cuddly 'fabric softener but the water should not be the problem ( as it sometimes can be with bore water or town water- we use tank water in the machine). I will definitely look up that softener suggested by you - thank you as my baby's all in one suits are terribly hard too. Someone else has kindly suggested less detergent and a slower spin so I will try that too!! Thanks again.

Yes, I had hard towels using my Bosch front loader too, but now use fluffy and try to hang in shade and this has made a difference!

I was told that our towels are not as soft when washed in a front loader because of the washing/rinsing action.....the water flowing through the clothes removes all of the dirt as well as the soap powder and the fabic softener we might use .....whereas in a top loader, the softness is because there is soap powder and fabric softener left in the clothes.....dont know...... could be?
