What is the most effective way to stop staining my scalp and shoulders when colouring my hair at home? Is there anybody else who has this problem?

Darker colours will stain more so if it's dark that you're using, I'd suggest you exfoliate into the hair line the morning of the colour and pack on the moisturiser as it’s the dry , dead skin cells that really grab the colour and stain. I personally like the St. Ives brand of exfoliators www.myshopping.com.au/PT--214_Skin_Care_Exfoliating_Scrub_St_Ives_Face_Care_Exfoliators__fs_3862_4161_4487_11932_22895_e__ and the Dove line of moisturizers www.myshopping.com.au/PT--214_Skin_Care_Dove_Face_Care_Moisturisers__fs_1948_11932_11946_e__
A lot of people also suggest using Vaseline or a thicker lip balm around your hairline. www.myshopping.com.au/PT--214_Skin_Care_Vaseline_Lip_Care__fs_4523_11935_e__
As far as staining your shoulders, try wrapping an old towel around your shoulders and securing it with a large hair clip or safety pin like they do in the salon.
